Are college sports good for your job resume?

March 8, 2010 - 11:33 am 3 Comments

How beneficial is playing Division IAA (like I do as a freshman) college football to my job resume? Is it worth all of the time you put in? Will it really help me get a job?

Even though it does not add to your skills at a job (except if you work in sports) it does help build camaraderie with an interviewer, co-worker, or boss. I am a college student, and numerous people (mostly guys) have told me that during interviews they started talking about sports. Think about it — if you can connect with the interviewer about something you both like, such as sports you would leave a memorable impression and are more likely to be selected for a job than someone who has the skills but does not connect to the interviewer. Also, most jobs have sporting events (ie. softball, basketball, baseball etc). This is great way to get to know your boss or other co-workers (especially if they’re male) and could be essential to you being selected for a promotion, raise, bonus etc.

When you start to interview for jobs, you will realize that it is much more than hard skills employers look for (this is especially to true in competitive industries like finance, accounting, etc).

It is a double edged sword though, if you have low grades (below 3.0) I would say ditch the sports and work on your grades. This is especially true if you want to pursue something like law (in which to get into the best schools you need at least a 3.3 gpa). The recession is making the competition very fierce! I am a senior in college and employers are not hiring much and are very selective. Hopefully, when you’re ready to graduate the markets won’t be so tight.

Is college sports better than pro sports because there not getting paid?

February 28, 2010 - 2:15 pm 2 Comments

I think in college there is more heart. Pro if you lose your still getting paid. I know that there are some players that’s not there for the money be what do you think.

college sports is another way for the players to make there case on how much they get paid for the next level. But overall id rather follow college teams then pro teams because there is no money involved yet. these colleges actually have to scout, mold, and fine tune the players they get to win. it is the real process of building a great team.

College Sports Fans Survey: How long to build up your tolerance of Brent Musburger?

February 26, 2010 - 3:16 pm 1 Comment

Every college football season, it takes me a few games to work up my tolerance to Mr. Musburger. This helps prepare me for when I get to hear him and Lavin talk about FOOTBALL during the BASKETBALL games they do.

Eventually, I end up avoiding games that Brent and Steve do somewhere around late January, unless it’s a big game.

What about you and your own Musburger Tolerance Level?

I rarely use all caps, but I will here to emphasize the intensity of my emotion.

I FREAKING HATE BRENT MUSBURGER! Couldn’t stand him when he did basketball with the equally annoying Billy Packer on CBS and it’s no better now.

And what IS the deal with he and Lavin always bringing up football during basketball games? I had forgotten about that.

Can you still play DI college sports, after you graduate?

February 24, 2010 - 12:23 pm 1 Comment

This is purely hypothetical;
Say I just graduated from college, haven’t played any sports, so I would still have 4 years of eligibility, I think?
Can I go back and play 4 years of college sports?

I know if you redshirt your freshman year, you can still play 4 years…which would mean you are staying for 5 years, and already graduated.

So if I went back to college and just took a couple of classes or something, could I play there?

I believe that you could play 4 years of college sports, BUT you have to be a graduate student at the school that you were an undergraduate.
