Going to university or north Carolina to major in sports management?

December 8, 2011 - 3:28 am 1 Comment

I’m in highschool right now but my plan is going to university of north Carolina and major in sports management but I also want to study a different language so I can become an English teacher in a different country for a few years then become an agent or just go straight into an agency firm. Is north Carolina hard to get into? And do you think my plan could be a successful one?

There are seven schools or divisions of the University of North Carolina. Please be specific so that your question may be properly answered.

Are Professional Sports, University Professors, and Television hyper emotionalizing our youth?

December 5, 2011 - 10:55 pm 8 Comments

They keep making decisions based on their emotions…
Zen
yes this is a big one-hyper emotionalizing of the youth and people in general-pushing someones buttons and training them to be sensitive to nonsense

hyper-emotionalizing?? thats a new word for me, I don’t really think I’m sufficently drunk enough to answer this question, which is saying a lot, because I’m pretty drunk right now!

If i want to do Sports Medicine, should I take Kinesiology in University before med school?

November 24, 2011 - 9:16 pm 2 Comments

I want to do Sports Medicine (or be a personal trainer as my fallback) so i’m wondering If i should take Kinesiology in University before med school, and what other courses should I take in University?
(I’m in currently in grade 10, and live in Canada by the way).

That is a very popular major for pre-med students.

To go to medical school in Canada or the USA, you first need a bachelors degree. It can be in any major but you need 8 to 10 specific sciences courses. In most schools Pre-med is not a major but the set of specific sciences courses you take for medical school. The courses vary depending on the medical school you choose. If you are a high school, the courses you take are not important as long as you can actually get into university or college. But you should take most of the AP sciences courses offered.

These courses generally take 2-3 years to complete.

Your choice of undergrad school is not that important as long as it is regionally accredited and they have the science courses you need. It is suggested that you may be better off at a less competitive undergrad school as you will likely get a better GPA. Going to an extremely competitive undergrad school generally makes little difference for getting into medical school and can hurt you if it causes you to get a lower GPA.

You should make sure the major you select is not a personal enrichment major but one that actually leads to a career in case you do not get into medical school. Biomedical engineering is one such useful major.

It is NOT recommended to double major if you want to go to medical school as this will not improve your chances but does have the very real possibility of dragging your GPA down enough that you will not get into medical school. Also going to community college for 2 years and transferring is not a good idea. Many medical schools will not count the sciences you took at community college and with scheduling issues it is not likely you will get all of them you need in 2 years of university. It is possible but it is very hard. More likely you will end up doing an extra year at university which will blow the money you saved by going to community college first.

A typical mix of required courses would include one year each of:

English
General chemistry with labs
Organic chemistry with labs
Biology with labs
Biochemistry
Physics with labs
Statistics
Calculus

and others that would be specific to the medical school you apply to.

If you are going the community college route and then transfer to a university as a junior, it is unlikely you can do the required courses in 2 years at the university. You will likely need three years which will wipe out your cost savings going the community college route. And if you went the community college route because of low high school GPA, it is doubling challenging as your chances are remote that you can improve your study habits enough get the very high university GPA needed for medical school..

As for what major to select, you may want to select a major that actually leads to a career just in case you do not get into medical school.

If you get a score on the MCAT exam of 32 you have a 3 in 4 chance of acceptance when accompanied by an undergrad GPA of 3.8 or higher. Go look at an MCAT study guide at a book store to get an idea of what you will need to learn.

Besides that, while an undergrad, you may want to become an Emergency Medical Technician. It will give you valuable experience in medical emergencies. And you will discover before it is to late if you have the stomach for the blood and you will learn how well you can handle life or death situations. Having pried bloody people out of car wrecks and saving most of them is something med schools like to see. And you may earn some money doing it.

My daughter got her EMT-B ticket while a senior in college by going to a community college three evenings a week for a semester. She tells me there is no rush like driving with lights and sirens. As well, some universities offer EMT training as an undergraduate course.

As a PhD student and EMT at a major university she that it appeared that 90% of the EMTs working for her school are pre-med as they believe it gave them an advantage, and after seeing a class of them graduate, it really did make a difference.

Regardless, to go to medical school requires a passion for medicine. If you are not passionate about medicine and the least bit doubtful whether it is the best choice for you, there is a very real possibility that you will not make it. That is, if you have to ask whether medical school is right for you, it likely is not.

Here is an example of what a top medical school costs excluding housing and board:

As for specialties, you take those after you get your MD.

Has Dwayne Johnson offered any comments in reference to The University of Miami Sports Scandal?

August 21, 2011 - 6:36 am 6 Comments

Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock went to and graduated from The Univeristy Miami and was a Defensive Linemen on the 1994 National Championship Team. This scandal happened years after Dwayne graduated, although he still keeps in touch with many friends and teammates.

Sadly, no. Those three basketball coaches are just stupid. Maybe in a few hours or days, The Rock will offer comments on the scandal.

which university has the lowest fees in the uk or ireland for sports science or physiology?

August 11, 2011 - 9:54 pm 2 Comments

im thnking about attending universrity in the uk or ireland. id like to know which university has the lowest fees for sports science or physiology or kinesiology? i’ll be considered "overseas" and not a home student because im coming from canada. thanks in advance everyone :)

Sorry, you are not going to be able to get someone here to give you accurate information. The fee structures are changing and you will need to go individually to each university to check but here are a couple of pointers that might help you;

1. Living in the UK or Ireland (note the use of capital letters) is terribly expensive. Choosing a university in a remote location will save you far more money than picking a cheap uni.

2. You really do get what you pay for. Studying at a lower ranked university to save £1,000 a year in fees may be a false economy. Take a look at the rankings here http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/universityguide

Does homeschooling give me a better chance of getting to play sports at a major university?

August 1, 2011 - 1:25 pm 5 Comments

I have wanted to go to Michigan University since i was 5 years old. now i am going into high school and i am wondering if i should homeschool or go to public school. would home schooling give me an edge over kids from public school to get scholarships? would coaches think that i would be worse at sports if i am homeschooled?

BQ: Michigan U or North Dakota?

That depends upon your sport. If it’s an individual sport that you can compete privately (like swimming and gymnastics) then homeschooling would allow you to have more time to practice. Otherwise, you should attend a public school which has a good team for your sport. That way recruiters will see you play. Either way, your studies are important so get as good grades as possible. Just being public, private, or home schooled doesn’t make a difference for most scholarships. Also, get involved in volunteering because that helps. Good luck!

SUNY Cortland vs Temple University for sports management?

July 20, 2011 - 7:46 pm 2 Comments

I hear both have excellent programs, but which is better. I want to make the most money possible w/o being an agenet. So which will make me more money do u think in the long run? Also, about how much do you think i can make annually with that degree?

Temple

I am in the school of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University which also has sport management and I can tell you its one of the best. I am loving it so much. The classes are great. We have to do internships and all of the professors are great, The school is not the big, and we are just like a big family. The programs is really good. You have the opportunity to gain a lot of experience. We have students working and interning at the Philly stadium, Eagles stadium and with the Flyers, also with Comcast spectator. They offer so many networking opportunities. Im actually on the Tourism side but take many classes with students from sport management. If you have any questions about Temple, or just the school, professors, classes just send me a message.

how to organize a local charity boxing event in a university between sports science versus physical education?

How to organize a local charity boxing event in a university between the sports and exercise science department students and faculty and the physical education department students and faculty

While I can’t give you any particular advice on this, I know that they organize a boxing tournament every year at Notre Dame — the Bengal Bouts. I believe that the money raised by this tournament goes to charity, but I’m not certain. You may want to get in touch with the folks who organize to see if they have any advice to share. Good luck.

Does the University of South Carolina have a better sports history than University of South Cali?

April 28, 2011 - 12:33 am 2 Comments

South Cali had most of its success in football and basketball when their teams played in sh1tty conferences and cheated all the time.

It had first Heisman winner to be stripped of a Heisman.

It also had a double murderer Heisman winner.

Well from all of this I could see the history in University of Southern California (fake USC).

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hes saying that because the Gamecocks skunked his team in the CWS and won the Championship

I go to Univ. of Sout Carolina and we only have had 1 person to ever win the Heisman and we only have 6 Championships and only 1 is in football(from the early 1900’s)

Though I love my school and state…I highly doubt that we have better sports history than Southern Cal.
