Can i become a personal trainer off a college national diploma in sports development & fitness? or do i have to go to uni?
Thanks

I am not aware that any jurisdictions require a license to be a personal trainer.

It is a question of whether you have the background to get a job at a gym or to attract clients.

Most gyms do not require a college or university degree in order to be a personal trainer. They do require certification through AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America)or ACE (American Council on Exercise), the two most recognized fitness certification groups. If you visit either of these companies web sites, you can search for when they offer their personal training certification. It only takes a weekend, however you would need to prepare before hand and purchase additional books. At the end of the weekend, there is a 2 part test: the written and the practical where you would demonstrate how to do specific activities. If you pass the tests and can show proof of current CPR certification, you receive your certification. You are then free to apply at gyms to be a personal trainer. It sounds like you already posses a degree in sports development and that will only add to your marketability. You might be able to charge more than someone without degree. You could try applying without the AFAA or ACE certification and see if they’d hire you based on your current degree, but most gyms require it.

I have a BS in Exercise Science and work in a gym (fitness instructor not personal trainer but I know how the gyms operate in terms of hiring PT’s)
