Can you please explain the plus and minus in sports gambling?

I’m a first timer and I took a bet. Miami vs new England pats. The thing said this with a box to check which one you think:
Miami dolphins (+10)
new England (-10)
I thought i took miami to win and they lost and I looked and it said I won the money I bet. What Is all this +10 and -10 stuff?

So you didn’t know anything about the point spread… you just really though Miami was going to beat New England?

If you took Miami you were receiving 10 points…this means in order for you to lose the bet, the Patriots had to win by 11…..If you had taken the Patriots today minus 10 points you would have lost, because they won by only 3
