why is sports gambling illegal everywhere except vegas?
in the United States

I think it’s more due to the perception of sports betting than anything. But if you make it legal, you can eliminate back alley bookies who don’t pay taxes, anyway! It seems a bit backward to me.

Sadly, you are mistaken. Many countries allow sports wagering.

    Here’s some examples:

Point of educational opportunity for the asker: The term : "everywhere" does not exclude destinations outside of the United States. Thumbs down to your ability to ask coherent questions.

I think it’s because of the backwards perception that if there was legal gambling on sports, tampering and fixing of games would be more prevalent. People like Pete Rose and that NBA referee from last year are not helping to alleviate these concerns, despite the fact that they are clearly the exception, not the rule.

The leagues might be part of the problem as well. The mayor of Las Vegas and others in the government here have been trying to get a major professional sports team here for years, but they are all shying away, despite the more than adequate potential fan base and market share. The NFL commissioner has even come out and said that Las Vegas will "never" get a team as long as they allow betting on NFL games.

The fact of the matter is, the entire gaming industry wants to keep games fair more than anyone else. They would be on the forefront of keeping games fair and balanced, as that’s how they make their money.

Gambling in general is highly limited everywhere except the state of Nevada.

What Matt said is correct. I find it amusing when the NFL makes statements like that. They’re ignoring the simple fact that a large part of the popularity of the NFL is due to the fact that there is gambling on the games.
